What is it?
Jiu-jitsu No-Gi or Nogi is a combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds, the Gi free version of BJJ. It is primarily a ground-based fighting style and involves taking one's opponent down to the ground, gaining a dominant position, and then using a number of techniques to force them into submission such as joint locks, chokeholds, or compression locks.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu is based on the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger opponent by using leverage and weight distribution. The focus is on taking the fight to the ground and using a number of holds and submissions to defeat them. Sparring and live drilling play a significant role in training. In Nogi as the name suggest the GI is not worn but rash guards are required. It can also be used for physical fitness, building character or as a way of life.
Class Structure/ What To Expect
The class coach will typically cover a series of techniques that progresses in each class across the course of a week (eg. mount attacks). 50% of class time is spent drilling the relevant techniques, and 50% participating in situation & live sparring.
The NoGi classes are suitable for all abilities.
Requirements
We recommend that for sparring, a gum shield is worn. There is no set uniform although participants are expected to wear a rash guard, well fit training top , spats, mma/board shorts with NO POCKETS OR ZIPS.
